The objective of this stage is to prepare the track/s for presentation to your audience. Rectifying any issues that may be present within the track and some subtle enhancement as well. For albums it will also include, obtaining a consistency (sonic quality and level) from track to track.
Upon receiving your track/s for Mastering, here is a summary the steps it will proceed through:
Your supplied Pre-Master track/s will be loaded into the DAW for the commencement of the mastering process.
Individual tracks will be listened to ensure there are no issues with the delivered file, including but not limited to, how the delivered file conforms to the specification required of a track presented for Mastering. A file will be rejected, and a replacement file requested, if any distortion, clipping and/or dropouts are present within the file. Additionally, a file will also be rejected if there is evidence of Maximisers/Finalisers in use to create the Pre-Master file.
Consideration will be given to what the track needs to achieve its Mastered state. If the Mastering is for an album, consideration will also be given to the differences between the supplied tracks.
Once the files have been checked, the tracks will be laid out in order, as required by the CD track order. Additionally, all of the audio material will be conformed to specified delivery sample rate at this time. All signal processing will be completed at that sample rate.
Each track is replayed and has appled the individual processing the track needs to achieve its Mastered state.
Once all of the tracks are replayed and have their individual needs addressed, the Final Mastering chain is set up on the either the single track or track list for an album. As part of the Final Mastering chain, the levels are lifted to achieve the desired presentation signal level.
After a break, the resulting processing will be re-examined and adjustments will be made as required. The results of the Mastering process will also be replayed at various levels and through different speaker setups as well with any adjustments found necessary, beeing applied.
A Master Proof will then be made available for your comments.
After the inclusion of any required revisions a Final Master will be created. The Delivery Items specified will also then be created and delivered to you.
